I pledge my support for the veterinary community, National Association of Veterinary Technicians (NAVTA), and the Veterinary Nurse Initiative (VNI) in their pursuit to establish a standard credential requirement, scope of practice, and title protection under the title of Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN).
I believe NAVTA and the VNI’s efforts will unify the veterinary profession across the nation. I agree that the title of nurse is better understood by the public, embodies the scientific and technical aspects of veterinary technicians’ role, and will lead to better understanding, visibility, respect and recognition by the public and the veterinary profession.
I recognize that there is minimal professional and public understanding about the credentialed veterinary technician’s role within the veterinary healthcare team, which creates economic and professional challenges. Credentialed veterinary nurses should be the veterinary caregivers of pets, as these individuals have the proven knowledge, skill, and passion that is required for providing quality veterinary care. I believe the presence of credentialed veterinary nurses will have a positive impact on patient care, the quality of life of pets and their families, and the success of veterinary practices.
A single, unified title and a standard credential requirement, scope of practice for Registered Veterinary Nurse that is protected throughout the nation will better align public understanding of the role and elevate standards met by each credentialed individual. Achievement of this initiative will assure the highest quality of care to patients and animal owners, improve public relations, promote the use of veterinary services, and enhance the sustainability of the veterinary profession.
I gladly support and promote this initiative to continue the advancement of veterinary nurses within the veterinary medical field.
