Portland Veterinary Medical Association (PVMA) is in support of the Veterinary Nurse Initiative (VNI) to pursue the establishment of the title of Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN) for all credentialed veterinary technicians in the United States. The PVMA recognizes the role of veterinary technicians as indispensable within the veterinary profession and integral in the mission to promote animal welfare and sustain the well-being of veterinarians and the quality of care their team can deliver.
A single unified title and a standardized credential of Registered Veterinary Nurse throughout the nation will reduce pet owners’ confusion and improve public awareness and recognition of the highly valuable skills these professionals bring to the veterinary team. CredenƟaled veterinary technicians will benefit from this new title as it better represents their role within the veterinary team and highlights the high level of care they give our patients and other animals.
We look forward to supporting the change in the Portland community of the status from veterinary technician to
veterinary nurse as the VNI proceeds with its legislative efforts across the country.
